150 years of history

in the beautiful Villa Mimbeli

To continue the journey through the history of Livorno Suite Marilia recommends a visit to the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum, home of works of art 100% from Livorno. Only 10 minutes away by car from our hotel.

The Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum is one of the structures assigned to the Museums and Culture Office of the Municipality of Livorno.

Heir of more than 150 years of history, the Civic Museum Giovanni Fattori of Livorno is located in the splendid Villa Mimbeli and preserves a rich collection of art from Livorno and Tuscany that begins with the work of Enrico Pollastrini, a romantic and tied up artist at the academy, to arrive at the high artistic expression of the works of Fattori and other leading exponents of the Macchiaioli school and the Post-Macchiaioli movement.

The ground floor and the first floor of the villa maintain the nineteenth-century style unchanged: decorations, furnishings and curtains. Here the works of Livornese artists such as Guglielmo Micheli, Ulvi Liegi, Oscar Ghiglia, Giovanni Bartolena and Mario Puccini are exhibited.

On the second floor you can admire the large paintings by Giovanni Fattori, such as the Assault on Madonna della Scoperta, Mandrie Maremmane, Signora Martelli at Castiglioncello and the Red Tower. Also on display are works by other members of the Macchiaioli movement: Silvestro Lega, Telemaco Signorini, Vincenzo Cabianca and Giovanni Boldini. Other rooms are dedicated to the post-Macchiaioli (Eugenio Cecconi, Vittorio Corcos) and the divisionists (Benvenuto Benvenuti and Plinio Nomellini).

The Museum carries out conservation and restoration activities, research and study, education also in collaboration with other institutions.

Finally, it organizes, participates in and hosts exhibitions and cultural initiatives.
